Waterproof vs. Water Repellent: What’s the Difference?

When choosing outdoor gear, understanding the difference between waterproof and water repellent can help you stay dry and comfortable.

What is Waterproof Gear?
Waterproof clothing features a special membrane inside the fabric that blocks water from passing through while allowing sweat vapor to escape. This makes it perfect for heavy rain and wet conditions.

What is Water Repellent Gear?
Water repellent gear is treated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating on the fabric surface, causing water to bead up and roll off. It’s lightweight and breathable but best for light rain or drizzle.

Choosing the Right Gear for You
For heavy rain or prolonged wet conditions, go for waterproof gear. For lighter rain or casual outdoor use, water repellent gear is ideal.

At Acme Projects, all our rain gear combines both waterproof membranes and water repellent finishes to keep you dry and comfortable outdoors.
